Damon Assanah, 33, was today sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment for raping a 13-year-old schoolgirl back in 2015. Assanah was arraigned before Justice Brassington Reynolds at the Demerara High Court on three counts of rape. However, he was found guilty on one count.
The charge states that in November 2015, he engaged in sexual penetration with a child who was under the age of 16. When the matter was called today, Justice Reynolds noted that the best thing the court can do is remove a person from society for a while for such an act.
Reports are that Assanah is known to the victim and her family, and during January 2015, he lured her out of her home and raped her near a ‘fowl pen.
Some nine months later, Assanah struck again. However, the child was seen around December 7, 2015, vomiting, which triggered her mother to take her to a hospital, where it was confirmed that she was pregnant. The child then replayed what transpired, and Assanah was arrested.
