Guyana’s Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony is urging persons to get vaccinated against COVID-19. He said that those who received both doses of the AstraZeneca, Sinopharm and Sputnik V vaccines have not been hospitalised or died of COVID-19.
He noted that so far, 223,659 or 45.9% of the adult population have received their first dose, with 92,157 (18.9%) receiving both jabs.
All of the vaccines being administered in Guyana are safe and effective, the Minister said. He added that the World Health Organisation (WHO) recently revealed that some 2.2 billion persons were vaccinated worldwide.
“So, we know that these vaccines are working and that they are protecting people from getting the disease,” he said.
He noted that Guyana started its vaccination campaign about 14 weeks ago, and since then, persons who received both doses of the vaccines have not been hospitalised.
“All of those persons, who received both doses of the vaccines, none of them have been hospitalised, none of them have come to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit), and none of them would have died from COVID. So if there’s any proof that anyone would like to have – here’s the proof. This thing is working…So it’s very clear that if you take both doses of the vaccine, you are going to be protected. And that’s what we want,” the Minister said.
