Alex Garraway, also known as “Uncle Alex,” was today sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a minor back in 2018.
Garraway, 22, was sentenced by Justice Brassington Reynolds in the High Court of Demerara. He would be eligible for parole after serving 20 years.
Garraway was absent from Court. However, Justice Reynolds, before handing down a sentence, said that “if anything, it is this that little defenseless girls must feel safe, and must be made to feel safe in their own homes by and among their own relatives, what better place than in their own homes.”
He said, “Family members who breach the trust reposed in them by the institution of the family must bear the full brunt of the law.”
Justice Reynolds commended the little girl for her bravery in sharing her story and the support staff, who made sure that justice was served.
Garraway of 1162 Cummings Park, ‘E’ Field, Sophia, was found guilty of raping a child under 16 years and engaging in sexual activity with the child.
He was found guilty of sexually penetrating the toddler between November 1, 2018, and April 30, 2019, and then performing the sexual act of touching and placing his penis on her buttocks, sometime during the same period.
The State’s case was presented by Prosecutors Nafeeza Baig and Sarah Martin, while Garraway was represented by Attorney-at-Law, Ravindra Mohabir.
