Nineteen-year-old, O’Brian Poonai was stabbed by his father on Monday night after the youth asked his father to quiet down during a drinking spree at Number 55 Village, Berbice. The 43-year-old father is now in hiding, while his son is a patient at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
According to the victim’s mother, her son indicated to her that he went home and met his father and his friends consuming alcohol under the house and so he retired to bed but he could not sleep due to the noise his father and his friends were making. As a result, he went downstairs and asked them to quiet down.
This triggered an argument between father and son, during which, his father armed himself with a screwdriver and stabbed the young man.
The victim ran out of the yard and was rescued by his neighbour who rushed him to the Skeldon Public Hospital. Police said the young man took self-discharge and went to his mother’s residence.
Poonai’s mother told police that her son collapsed in front of her gate on Tuesday. He was rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital and was later transferred to New Amsterdam Public Hospital.
