Twenty-year-old, Kareem Powley of East La Penitence, Georgetown, was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident that occurred around 22:30hrs last night at Nelson Mandela Avenue.
Guyana Standard understands that at the time of the accident, Powley was a pillion rider on motorcycle CK 7783, driven by 21-year-old Joshua Mentore of Pattensen, East Coast Demerara.
Enquiries disclosed that the motorcycle was proceeding north on the western carriageway of Nelson Mandela Avenue at a fast rate of speed when tragedy struck.
Mentore told police that a black motorcar (number and make unknown), which was proceeding in the said direction to the right side of him, swerved left (west) and caused him to lose control.
He ran off the road and collided with a pile of stone that was on the western parapet of the said road. The duo subsequently fell onto the road’s surface, receiving injuries.
Powley was picked up in an unconscious condition by the EMT but succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Mentore remains in custody assisting with the investigation.
