Guyana is set to receive some US$1.8M from the Global Fund to aid in its COVID-19 fight. These funds will be used to enhance the capabilities of intensive Care Units (ICUs) at all the regional hospitals, Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony said today during his COVID-19 update.
“So, these funds will assist us in adding ICU-type beds, it will also assist us in procuring monitors and ventilators and create a space in each one of the Regional Hospitals so that we can manage patients with severe COVID…So, we’re expected about US$1.8M over the next couple of months to be able to do these activities,” the Minister said.
He added that the Global Fund has been one of Guyana’s traditional partners in health. In the past, the country worked with the Global Fund to get resources for HIV, T.B., and malaria. With the world battling the pandemic, Global Fund has allowed the use of some of its funds to deal with COVID-19.
Earlier this year, the Fund opened a special window, where countries can apply for specific COVID-19 grants. Guyana started that application process a month ago, and received confirmation about two days ago, that its proposal was successful, the Minister said.
