Guyana has recorded 65 murders between the months of January and June this year, says Police Commissioner (acting), Nigel Hoppie.
“We continue assiduously to confront the challenges of the criminal community and unto the end of June this year have recorded an 18.7% decrease in serious crimes compared to the similar period last year. Robbery under arms has seen a decrease of 36.3%, while there has been a 16.7% decrease in the offence of Murder with 65 such incidents unto June this year compared to 78 for the same period last year,” the Top Cop said at an event today.
He reported also, that at the end of June this year, seven women were murdered compared to 20 for the same period last year. Of the seven victims, six were killed during domestic related incidents, while of the 20 women last year, 10 were killed during domestic disputes.
While there have been decreases in other serious crimes for the period January to June this year in comparison to the similar period last year, the offence of rape has seen an increase of 70% with figures of 90 last year compared to 153 this year.
The Commissioner said that the Force has been successful in solving several crimes and placing those responsible before the courts.
He highlighted the dismantling of the criminal group responsible for robbing customers leaving gold vendors establishments; the arrest and charging of arsonists responsible of the razing of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) building in Linden; the arrest and charging of suspects in the Henry Boys’ and Haresh Singh’s murder cases; solving the case surrounding the murder of Taxi Driver, Kenrick Trim; and the arrest of Answar Stoll’s murderer.
