A murder charge was today brought against a labourer after he allegedly, fatally stabbed a young man following an eviction notice.

45-year-old Rawle Lamaison, a Labourer of Durban Back Lands Squatting Area Georgetown, was remanded by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan who read the indictable charge to him.

It is alleged that on June 12, 2021, at Middleton Street Campbellville, Georgetown, Lamaison murdered Dwayne Taitt, a 24-year-old enforcement officer attached to the Guyana Revenue Authority.

The matter was adjourned until August 12.

According to the police, Lamaison was arrested on the day the young man was murdered. Taitt was fatally stabbed at around 00:30hrs allegedly by Lamaison following an eviction from the apartment where he, his wife and two-year-old daughter lived.

Guyana Standard understands that the family was given up to July 14 to vacate the premises. But during the wee hours of July 12, Taitt woke to someone banging on the door with a piece of wood demanding that the family vacate the building. He opened the door and went out to the suspect, who was armed with a knife, which he used to attack Taitt.

Taitt ran out on a street opposite the said apartment, where the suspect pursued and dealt him a stab to his chest. The young man collapsed, while the suspect fled the scene with the weapon.

Taitt was picked up by his reputed wife and a security guard and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he was pronounced dead by a doctor. The body was examined, and a wound was seen to his left upper chest.
