The latest figures provided by the Police Commissioner (Acting), Nigel Hoppie, shows a 32% decrease in fatal accidents, with 48 recorded this year compared to 71 for the same period last year. This has contributed to a 30% decrease in fatalities, with 52 recorded so far in 2021 as opposed to 74 during the corresponding period of 2020.
Pedestrians and motor cyclists continue to be the major categories of road users to die in accidents, with 17 and 12 respectively. Inattentiveness and speeding were cited as the two major causes of road accidents, resulting in 21 and 18 fatal accidents respectively.
The Guyana Police Force has also recorded 8,719 cases for speeding, 459 for driving under the influence and 10,188 instances of persons driving without a license.
Regarding drug enforcement, some 112 fields, 89 acres of cannabis sativa (marijuana) were located and destroyed. Additionally, 34 illegal firearms were recovered by the police so far this year with 17 pistols, eight revolvers and nine shotguns confiscated.
