Guyana is currently witnessing a surge in COVID-19 infections, with the country recording 313 cases within the last 24 hours. According to the Health Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony, this number is ‘perhaps the highest’ ever recorded in a day. The cases were identified from the 2,346 tests that were done on Tuesday last.
Yesterday, the Minister called on citizens to exercise caution as the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Infectious Disease Hospital at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara, nears exhaustion. Additionally, almost 40 persons died of the disease within the last week.
There are 3,368 active cases in the country with 1,955 in Region Four (Demerara/Mahaica) and 805 in Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara).
The Minister is again calling on citizens to be responsible.
“I hope that people are paying close attention to these numbers…because if you don’t abide by the rules; masking and social distancing, sanitization, and taking a vaccine, unfortunately, you are going to get infected. If you’re unvaccinated, you could end up in the hospital.”
