Despite the number of active COVID-19 cases quadrupling within the last month, Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony says that the 4,070 recorded so far is an ‘underestimate’. He said that Guyanese are displaying testing hesitancy, resulting in the reported number of cases not reflecting the true situation on the ground. This, he said, gives a false sense of safety to citizens, and distorts the Health Ministry’s view of the situation in the respective regions.
“Some of the regions where you see relatively low cases, it might be an underestimate because of the [low] number of testing they have been doing. So, we have to test more in those regions because we think there are many more cases in those regions rather than what is reflected,” he said.
Yesterday, the minister opined that the hesitancy being displayed might be stemming from fear. He said that persons may not want to be tested because of isolation requirements to which they will have to subscribe.
