The Minister of Culture Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson is resolute in his new belief that talent can be learned. As such, he, along with his team, has set up a programe to be executed by Guyana’s first-ever sports academy.
The Minister made the announcement this morning at the opening of a sports conference held at the National Cultural Centre.
During his presentation, the Minister gave an overview of the purpose of the sports academy as well as the model it will take.
He started by explaining his belief that talent is not something humans are born with but something that is developed. Ramson said that he too used to believe that talent is a gift but his thinking was coloured by Daniel Coyle through his book, “The Talent Code.”
Ramson posited that every action is a talent and “doing it over and over is how we perfect it.”
He continued, “Talent can be developed, and even when you are the worse at something, you are capable of advancing it. “This, he said, extends beyond sport and even into the world of music
After establishing that talent is something humans develop, the Minister said that that will be the purpose of the Sports Academy is to do just that.
Ramson said that the academy is therefore not a building but a programme. One that is going to be run by the National Sports Commission in close partnership with the sports associations and federations.
The Minister highlighted the three pillars of the academy: the nursery, tournaments, and elite training.
Ramson noted that he has high expectations for the programme and looks forward to the assistance of the sports associations.
