Seebaran Dhankumar, 47, of North Public Road, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara was killed in an accident at Strangroen Public Road, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD) yesterday afternoon around 18:00hrs.
Enquiries disclosed that minibus, BTT 3832, driven by Surujpaul Bissoon, 61, of Novar, Mahaicony, ECD, was proceeding east along the said road allegedly at a fast rate of speed when tragedy struck.
The driver told police that the victim was cycling in front of him on the northern side of the road when he suddenly changed directions and ended up in his path.
He said he applied brakes to avoid a collision, but despite his efforts, he collided with the pedal cyclist.
Dhankumar was picked up and taken to the Mahaicony Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor.
The driver is in custody assisting with the investigation.
