Guyana has 1,532 active cases of COVID-19, with 52 new infections recorded within the last 24 hours, Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony has said. There are 66 persons hospitalised throughout the country, with 43 patients being housed at the Infections Disease Hospital (formerly the Ocean View Hotel location) at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara. There are 15 patients in that facility’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), along with 28 pregnant women who are being kept in an isolated area of the hospital.
According to the Minister, pregnant women make up the majority of hospitalised persons, with four more testing positive within the last 24 hours. The Minister is urging that pregnant women get vaccinated immediately to avoid severe complications.
“So, again, I think that it is important that pregnant women get vaccinated. It doesn’t matter what trimester, but they need to get their vaccination. The vaccines are safe during pregnancy; it does not affect the mother or the child. So, we’re encouraging mothers to get their vaccines,” the Minister said.
