Roopnarine Ramoutar, 67, of Lot 219, Number 72 Village, Corentyne Berbice died in an accident that occurred in his village yesterday.
Tragedy struck around 17:45hrs when motor lorry, GHH 7458, driven by Diaram Persaud, 52, of lot 8 ‘C’ Number 74 Village was proceeding south along the eastern drive lane at a fast rate of speed, while Ramoutar, was proceeding north along the western side on an electric cycle.
It is alleged that Ramoutar made a sudden right turn east in the vicinity of # 72 Access road into the path of the motor lorry and came into contact with the front right portion of the vehicle.
He was subsequently flung off his bike some distance away onto the road’s surface on the eastern corner, while the electric cycle got stuck under the motor lorry which continued driving before stopping about 300 feet away in the eastern drive lane.
As a result of the collision, the cyclist received injuries to his head and about his body and was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital. He was seen and examined by a doctor who pronounced him dead on arrival.
His body is at the said hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
A breath analyzer test was conducted on the driver which recorded zero readings and he is presently in police custody assisting with the investigation. Notice of intended prosecution has been served. Further enquires are in progress.
