Incumbent People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Chairman, Volda Lawrence is tired. She is of the firm belief that there is much work to be done in several quarters in order to move Guyana forward but is contending that, for her own health and wellbeing, she must take a step back.
Lawrence made this known just after a press conference held this morning to update the media about her party’s preparedness for its upcoming 21st Biennial Delegates Congress.
Lawrence declined to contend for any of the leadership positions in her party. Many speculated that she might have done this because of her discontent in the manner in which she was treated by other bigwigs in the party. Lawrence was not even asked by David Granger to sit in the National Assembly.
However, Lawrence confirmed today that she is not walking away from her party, she is simply taking a step back. She noted that she is still in charge of the women’s arm of the party and does not have any intentions of neglecting that role.
However, Lawrence said, “I see myself in this stage of my life, not in the hectic fray but more of an advisor. I want to be able to do my work, which you know is a lot of social work.
She added, “I want to do me, I don’t know if you get it. I am really sad at where the country is, it bothers me personally. I do not know how to divorce myself from that and in the best interest of my health, I need to step back.
Lawrence said that she does not have a horse in the leadership race.
She said that ever since she was made to act as Leader in the absence of Granger, she decided that if she is going to be guiding the process, “I have to walk that middle line. I believe in talking the talk and walk the walk.”
Lawrence said that she will walk that middle line until she gets into the booth on Saturday where she intends to cast her vote “in the best interest of the party and our people.”
