Motorcyclists who perform stunts on the roadways can be charged for dangerous driving, says Officer in Charge of Traffic in Region 4 “A”, Deputy Superintendent, Timothy Williams. During a recent “Traffic and You” programme, Williams noted that “popping wheelies” are illegal and motorcyclists caught doing this or other actions inconsistent with safe use of the roadways, can be charged.
“That’s a form of dangerous driving, because the laws apply to motorcyclists [as well as] operators of any class of vehicle. So, if you’re using your vehicle in a reckless manner, that is wheelieing and speeding unnecessarily on the road, and swaying in and out of traffic, we can prosecute you for being dangerous or reckless, as simple as that. (Wheelieing) is a form of recklessness,” he said.
Williams added that more ranks are being placed on the roadways, specifically on the weekends to look out for these kinds of road usage. It was pointed out that these activities are prevalent on the East Bank of Demerara (EDB) where biker gangs would do “stunts” while heading to or from the Linden/Soesdyke Highway.
“Yes, we have a number of ranks who would be out there to look out for these motorcyclists riding in a reckless manner mostly on the weekends…A lot of them would travel in large groups. Sometimes they want to take over the road and all of that. We would – once we discover them on the road – try to break up the groups,” he noted.
