Two men who claim the police wrongfully arrested them over an armed robbery were today remanded.

Devon Cromwell, 31, of King Edward Street, Albouystown, and Sean Maynard, 27, of New Market Street, Georgetown, were this morning arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts where they were charged with stealing a gun and ammunition along with other articles. Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus read the charge to them.

Both men pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleges that on January 19, at Water Street, they stole a .32 semi-automatic pistol, 14 live rounds of ammunition, a chain, a cellphone, a gold ring, $200,000 cash and articles totaling $631,000, property of Randell Singh.

The Police Prosecutor told the court that the men were arrested just days after the matter was reported and they were positively identified by the virtual complainant. The prosecutor said that the two men confronted their victim and held him at gun point before relieving him of the articles mentioned in the charge.

However, the men told the court that they were both wrongfully arrested. They insisted that they are innocent of the charge. Maynard explained that there was video footage of the robbery which was shown to him but that he is clearly not the person in the video. Cromwell also said he was not the robber.

The Prosecutor objected to bail citing the prevalence of the charge, the dangerous weapon used and the assumption that the men of granted bail will reach out to the virtual complainant and possibly threaten him.

After hearing the prosecutor’s grounds for objection, the men were denied bail. The duo is expected to return on February 28.
