The Ministry of Public Works has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the reported capsizing of a boat owned by Noble House Seafood in coastal waters some 18 miles off Mahaicony last Saturday, following which several fishermen are now missing.
The ministry has assured that all available resources of the State to aid in this search and rescue exercise will be fully utilized. The private sector including private fishing vessels are also engaged in this ongoing search and rescue operation.
An independent panel was established comprising representatives of the Ministry of Public Works, Maritime Administration Department, the Guyana Defense Force Coast Guard, the Guyana Police Force Marine Unit, and the Transport and Habours Department.
“We are very concerned, and share the anxiety and pain of the family members and colleagues of the missing men. The Search and Rescue Operation Center was immediately activated, upon notification of this incident. Vessels and personnel, including divers have been deployed,” the Public Works Ministry said in a recent statement.
The missing men have been identified as 44-year-old Harold Damon, who was the Captain of the vessel; 78-year-old Ronald Burton; and Winston Sam, 47.
Guyana Standard understands that a fourth crew member, who survived the incident, was rescued by another boat and was brought to shore Saturday afternoon.
