Eighteen-year-old Matthew Ambedkar who was street racing when he rammed into a West Coast Demerara (WCD) drinking establishment last night killing three persons, was not under the influence of alcohol, police say.

The accident occurred about 21:35 hours on the De Willem Public Road.

According to police, motorcar PVV 1051, driven by the Ambedkar, was proceeding west along the southern side of the road allegedly racing with another motorcar (number unknown), when he lost control of his vehicle and collided into motor jeep PYY 9456 which was parked on the public road in front of Sharmilla Harikissoon Sports Bar. Ambedkar’s car then ploughed through the patrons who were at the bar.

Those dead have been identified as 23-year-old pedestrian, Carlito Kissoon Gobinlall of De Willem; 46-year-old, Kiran Rampersaud, a fisherman of lot 41 Zeeburg, WCD; and 44-year-old Ayube Mohamed. At least two others suffered minor injuries, were treated and sent away.

Ambedkar, who suffered injuries to his face, is at a West Demerara hospital under police guard. He was breathalyzed and no trace of alcohol was found in his breath.

The bodies of Carlito Kissoon Gobinlall, Kiran Rampersaud and Ayube Mohamed were then escorted to the Ezekiel Mortuary.

Further investigations are ongoing.
