A vendor and her daughter were released on $70,000 bail yesterday after being charged over the assault of their cousin.

Melanie Stewart, 47, and Steffany Dick, 26, both vendors of East La Penitence, Georgetown, denied the charge that was read to them by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

The particulars of the charge alleges that on January 9, at East La Penitence, Georgetown, the pair unlawfully and maliciously wounded Nalisa McKenzie with intent to maim, disfigure, disable or cause grievous bodily harm on Nalisa McKenzie.

The court heard that the two women are cousins to McKenzie. It is alleged that McKenzie visited their home on January 9, when an argument ensued between Stewart and McKenzie. This was followed with Dick allegedly choking the woman during an altercation which started because of the argument.

The woman was allegedly choked before she fell to the ground. Both Stewart and Dick then armed themselves with sticks which they used to beat the woman.

After the beating, she was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital in an ambulance. A doctor on duty examined her and she was subsequently admitted.

The two women were arrested and later released on $15,000 station bail, each. The police prosecutor had no objections to the women’s release, hence they were each placed on $70,000 bail and told that they are not to go within 50 feet of the woman. They were also told that they are not make any efforts to contact her and are expected to return to court on March 16.
