Commander for Regional Police Division One, Superintendent Himnauth Sawh has confirmed that Roy Harry, a 29-year-old miner of Wauna, Mabaruma in the North West District (NWD) was stabbed by a co-worker, sometime between 03:00hrs and 04:00hrs on Wednesday.
Commander Sawh said a report was made via telephone to the police at 05:50 hrs about a ‘stabbing incident’ that occurred at Reserve Baramita, NWD this morning in which the victim was seriously injured by the suspect.
Information received indicated that the victim and the suspect, a 21-year-old man, work at the same mining camp. They were reportedly drinking/imbibing alcohol at New Star Backdam in Baramita and subsequently had a misunderstanding over a female acquaintance.
However, they left together for their mining camp and thereafter got into a further argument which resulted in the suspect allegedly assaulting the victim and stabbing him with a knife.
Earlier this morning, around 04:00 hours, the suspect related the situation to another mining camp worker, Michael Green, a 48-year-old mechanic of #53 Village, Corentyne, Berbice. After speaking to Green, the suspect then left the area claiming that he was going to the police station to report the matter.
On hearing of the tragedy, Green rushed over to the camp and made checks where he observed the victim lying motionless on the ground with what appeared to be a stab wound to his chest. Green then reported the matter to the police, via telephone.
Sergeant English, D/Cpl 20523 Duke and other ranks of Baramita Police Station were immediately deployed to the location to conduct investigations. All likely escape routes were also monitored by the investigators in an effort to capture the suspect.
At around 8:00 hrs, the suspect was seen walking along a trail at Reserve, Baramita that was not leading to the police station.
Commander Sawh said the suspect is in custody at Baramita Police Station and is cooperating with the investigators.
Investigations are ongoing.
