A dozen persons are now homeless following a fire that took place at a building located along the Kwakwani Main Road, Berbice yesterday.
The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) said it received a report of a building on fire at 12:11 pm and Water Tender # 69 from the Kwakwani Regional Democratic Council responded to the blaze.
Upon arrival, firefighters saw the one-flat wooden structure, which was owned by Inshally Bacchus and used as living quarters, engulfed in flames.
As a result of the fire, the building and its contents were destroyed.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire. The Divisional Officer and the Maintenance Officer are en route to the Kwakwani location to aid in the investigation.
There were no casualties or injuries sustained as a result of the fire, the GFS confirmed.
The GFS is refuting claims that Water Tender #69 arrived at the location without water. It said that given the size of the blaze, more water was needed.
The service thanked the residents for their swift action which assisted in saving Bacchus’s home which is located next to the living quarters.
The Guyana Fire Service is recommending the installation of smoke detectors and the use of fire extinguishers in homes and businesses so that persons can be prepared and alerted in the event of a fire.
