The perpetuation of “rumours” of an illegal gun licencing scheme by a retired Assistant Commissioner of Police has caught the attention of the Home Affairs Minister, Robeson Benn.

The minister is now seeking information from the retired cop, Clinton Conway, who is also a former Police Service Commission (PSC) member.

In a letter purportedly written and published in one of the daily newspapers, Conway spoke of an alleged “flourishing” multimillion-dollar scheme targeting persons desirous of obtaining gun licences.

He made reference to a recent report about a man who was charged by the police with allegedly uttering a forged firearm approval letter to the police in an unsuccessful bid to obtain a firearm licence.

Conway said that if the article is accurate, “it is shocking”.

” This may be just the tip of the iceberg. The alarm bells should be ringing. Red flags must be flying. There are rumours that currently operating is a flourishing and illegal multi-million dollar enterprise targeting persons desirous of obtaining a firearm licence,” Conway’s letter said.

He went on to say that “the starting price is G$1 million, depending on the type and caliber of the firearm requested”.

The retired cop noted also that the unlawful enterprise is conducted by persons from Shiv Chanderpaul Drive, a house in Robb Street, Young Street, Lamaha Street and Brickdam.

The Home Affairs Minister is now requesting that Conway provide the Criminal Investigation Department and the Ministry of Home Affairs with the information he has to aid in “ongoing investigations”.
