Khamwattie Mangar Karpen, the female driver who was involved in an accident on the Nigg Public Road in Corentyne, Berbice on May 6, 2022, which claimed the life of motorcyclist Rajendra Khadaroo, was charged today.
About 09:00hrs, Karpen was charged by Police Corporal Nagessar with causing death by dangerous driving and driving a motor vehicle while her breath alcohol level exceed the prescribed limit of 35 micrograms.
The accused appeared at the Albion Magistrate’s Court this morning before His Worship Rabindranauth Singh, where she was not required to plea to the ‘Causing Death’ charge and was placed on $500,000 bail. She pleaded not guilty to the other charge and was placed on $20,000 bail.
The accused was represented by Attorney-at-Law Jagmohan.
The magistrate indicated that he knows the accused and the now-deceased, and subsequently recused himself.
He referred both matters to the Chief Magistrate at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for reassignment on May 23, 2022.
According to the initial police report, the accident occurred sometime around 05:00hrs that morning. The report also said that the now-deceased was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
After they collided, Khadaroo was flung off of his cycle and onto the front windscreen of the car, before hitting the road’s surface.
He was picked up by public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
