Police in Regional Division Three are investigating a fatal accident which occurred around 15:45 hrs today on the Goed Fortuin Public Road, West Bank Demerara involving a Police Force vehicle and a 12-year-old schoolgirl.
Reports suggest that the child, who has since been identified as Kayla Barnabas, a student of West Demerara Secondary School, was struck down by the motor pickup, GXX 6575 driven by a Police Corporal.
Information received is that Force motor pickup GXX 6775 was proceeding south along the eastern side of the road when it was alleged that the schoolgirl ran from east to west across the road in the path of the pickup.
The driver swerved west to avoid a collision but the front of the vehicle collided with the schoolgirl.
She was placed in a motor vehicle in an unconscious state and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Investigations are ongoing.
