Amidst accusations that the government is injecting too much money into the economy in the form of handouts and part-time jobs, Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo said the government knows what it is doing. In fact, Dr. Jagdeo told the media that it is all part of a “master plan” that is being rolled out.
Dr Jagdeo hosted an almost three-hour press conference today at the Office of the President. He used the forum to address several issues but focused extensively on the economy, oil and gas, and Guyana’s energy future in view of the global goal to achieve net-zero.
The VP also addressed criticisms levelled against the government by Opposition Leader, Aubrey Norton.
Norton believes that the PPP government can run Guyana into trouble with its part-time jobs initiative and the delivery of “so many” handouts.
Today, Dr Jagdeo said that everything the government is doing has been carefully thought-out. He said the money to finance these initiatives is coming from budgetary allocations.
“This is not a spur of the moment thing; it is not spontaneous,” said Jagdeo adding that the part-time job initiative is part of a “master plan” being rolled out. “We have outlined why we need to do this at least temporarily until we can get more permanent and better-paying jobs in the outlying areas, Dr. Jagdeo asserted.
At a previous press conference, Dr Jagdeo had told the media that the government saw the need to step in and create part-time jobs in the outlying regions as many complained about not having access to same. He said that this state of affairs is quite contrary to what gives in the City where there is a shortage of manpower.
