Vice President, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo recently disclosed that the government will seek the assistance of an international consultant to help manage the transformative gas-to-energy project.
During a press conference on Thursday Dr. Jagdeo said, “…We will go to tender in a matter of weeks for an international project management group that will manage the contract on our behalf to see that the quality is maintained and that it comes in on budget and on time because we don’t have that capability even at GPL.”
He added, “We had to get a foreign company to advise us because this is a new project type; it is a combined cycle-steam power plant which is more stable. So we will go out for the team to oversee this project.”
The Vice President further noted that a Request for Proposals has gone out to nine prequalified companies. They are expected to return their submissions by July to construct the Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) processing facilities and power plant.
With an estimated development cost of US$900M, the gas-to-energy project is designed to provide 250MW of power to the national grid, following its estimated operationalization period of late 2024. It is also estimated to create about 775 jobs. About 700 of these will be aggregated to the construction phase, while the remaining 75 are for the other aspects of the project life cycle.
