The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) reported today that the Blairmont Estate commenced work on its second crop on Friday, July 15, 2022.

The state-owned entity said the factory started grinding operations four days later and made its first declaration of 72 tonnes of sugar on Wednesday, July 20, 2022.

The second crop of 2022 is scheduled for approximately eight weeks with a target of 7,899 MT.

Guyana Standard understands that one of the estate’s main concerns is the availability of labour and attendance. In this regard, the estate’s management via a missive said it is appealing to all employees to turn out in their numbers so that a regular supply of canes is available for continuous grinding in the factory. It said this will allow for the achievement of Blairmont’s weekly target of 925 tonnes of sugar, and employees benefiting from extra earnings.

The estate also expressed thanks to the GuySuCo Board and the PPP Government for supplying much-needed resources at the estate such as tillage tractors which were among the most critical resources needed.

Additionally, management said the factory’s critical spares and parts were made available in a timely manner allowing for a smooth transition in the second crop of 2022.

Finally, Guyana Standard understands that Blairmont Estate is re-engineering itself to become one of GuySuCo’s profit centers. Management said investments will see the estate maximizing its production of bag and package sugar.

Currently, extension work on the sugar bond is being undertaken and approximately 48% of the work has been completed.
