The Government of Guyana is requesting that the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) submits documents it received from the then-ruling party, the A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) about voter fraud allegations during the highly controversial March 2, 2020, General and Regional Elections.
The Attorney General (AG) and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall made the disclosure last night during his live “Issues in the News” programme. He also confirmed that a missive from his office was dispatched to GECOM’s Chairwoman, Justice (retired) Claudette Singh formally requesting the information.
During the March polls, the APNU+AFC made a number of allegations during the recount process including “ghost” voting and voter impersonation. The party said that it also found instances where persons, who were aboard, voted. Several days later, the party faced severe criticism after its list of names was disputed by the “dead” persons they claimed could not have voted. Still, the party remains adamant that illegal voting took place.
The AG said that the documents when obtained from GECOM, will be perused and handed over to the relevant law enforcement authorities to probe their authenticity and source.
The March 2020 General and Regional Election has been characterized as the longest electoral process in Guyana’s history, spanning five months of back-to-back litigation, protests and rigging allegations.
