Public Works officials have refused to commit to a deadline for the reopening of the Demerara Harbour Bridge which suffered extensive damage after being rammed by a vessel, MV TradeWind Passion, this morning.

The vessel bears a Panamanian flag and was among five vessels this morning that passed through.

Minister, Juan Edghill told reporters today that the link could be reopened in 72 hours or longer. He said that components are being fabricated to replace damaged structures to four spans: eight to 11.

The official also reported that a Board of Inquiry will commence work tomorrow to ascertain what led to the collision. Preliminary reports, he said, seem to suggest that something “not ordinary” transpired. The captain of the vessel was tested negative for alcohol and drugs.
