Earlier today, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha commissioned a new coconut nursery in Hosororo Village, Barima – Waini (Region One).
The nursery is located in the National Agriculture Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) compound with some $4.3 million being expended to construct and stock the nursery with 18-month coconut seedlings.
While speaking at the simple commissioning exercise, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha said the project, like all other projects of the government, was people-centered.
He also stressed that given the global demand for coconuts and coconut bi-products, the government was working to make the necessary planting materials available to expand production locally.
Seedlings will be available for purchase sometime in December.
While there, Minister Mustapha also commissioned several pieces of machinery that were purchased by NAREI to service the agency’s spices processing facility. A ginger washer, ginger slicer, ginger grinder, and a vibro sifter were purchased and installed at the facility.
These additional pieces of equipment were procured at a cost of $9.7 million.
