Pandemonium broke out in Charity today after residents learned that an elderly woman was murdered by her granddaughter who is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation.

Guyana Standard understands that 73 year-old Agatha Gamell of Charity, Essequibo Coast was heard screaming on Sunday morning before she was discovered in a pool of blood in her home.

The suspect, her 22 year-old granddaughter, attempted to escape, but was caught by police covered in blood just a few distance away from the scene of the crime.

A source close to the investigation revealed that the suspect, also a teacher, had an argument with the now dead woman and stabbed her several times with a pair of scissors. The young woman, according to the source, does not live with her grandmother but would frequently visit.

Meanwhile, at the crime scene, neighbours were left puzzled, questioning what could have occured on Sunday morning. One neighbour recounted hearing screams coming from within the house.

“I was sleeping and then I heard this loud scream and I got up and looked through the window and the screams got louder before it stopped. I thought somebody broke into the house,” the neighbour said. It was further revealed that the suspect was then seen leaving the house in a frantic haste.

“She rushed out of the house, all her clothes had blood but what had me worried was the fact that she had her baby in her hand and she was looking around to see where she could possibly go,” neighbour added.

The source however said that the woman was assisted by persons in the village whom she asked for help. She was later arrested after the body of her grandmother was discovered. The suspect reportedly gave birth to her baby just weeks ago.
