The community of Success, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was thrown into a state of mourning after a couple was found dead following an apparent instance of electrocution near their home in Success Squatting Area.
The couple from all indications died on their way home last night and was only discovered at dawn.
Family of the couple identified them as 32-year-old Selochanie Hansraj and 39-year-old Prahalad Jagnarine. The police are of the theory that Jagnarine might have stepped on an illegal wire and was electrocuted, while Hansraj, in her attempt to save him, met her demise.
At the scene, relatives gathered, some in tears while others consoled the only child of the couple who found them dead after calls to their phones went unanswered. Relatives said that Jagnarine worked as a taxi driver and his wife worked in the maternity ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The couple’s surviving child, Treshana Abrahim, explained that it was unusual for her parents not to return home. The teen explained that last evening, her father was in the village imbibing when he contacted her mother.
She further noted that somewhere around midnight she was alarmed by the barking of the dogs in the yard, but up until that point, she didn’t assume the worst.
“They were barking for a long period but I did not come outside to see what was going on because I was scared. When I got up this morning I saw both of them lay down on the ground and I started calling out for help,” the teen lamented.
Meanwhile a source close to the investigation told Guyana Standard that a number of illegal wires were found in the district. The source said that because of the recent downpour of rain, the area was flooded which cloaked the live wire. In addition, the source said that it is usually dark at night hence the couple got electrocuted.
Investigations are ongoing.
