Home Affairs Minister, Robeson Benn has condemned the City Mayor, Ubraj Narine for attempting to prevent the removal of stalls and other makeshift apparatuses used by vendors “illegally” occupying spaces outside of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on Monday.

Mayor Narine was photographed last night lying under a vehicle to prevent the carting away of stalls.

Benn, who was photographed lying down at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre in 2020 in protest against the former government and police, says that the Mayor should have conducted himself in a more “dignified manner”.

“Last night’s antics and public expressions of the Mayor in this incident, were totally uncalled for and could have been resolved in a more dignified manner,” Benn said in a statement today.

He added that the Mayor has completely disregarded his Oath of Office and has forgotten that the call to service is one that collectively and individually requires upholding the oath of office, and more importantly, understanding the development shift and priorities.

The Minister is calling for the Mayor’s resignation and added that the police have been requested to review the “antics and utterances of the Mayor” for breaches of the peace and the law.

“I call on every person to publicly disassociate themselves from the hurtful words and actions of the Mayor, which could only have been intended to promote racial and religious disharmony, the continuation of the illegal occupation of spaces in the city, and the violence which it promotes,” the Minister noted.
