The 28-year-old firewoman who allegedly caused the death of a toddler in Berbice was on Friday given her pretrial liberty at a cost of $100,000 when she made her first court appearance at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.

It is alleged that on December 23, 2022, Chandani Mohabir, at Angoys Avenue, New Amsterdam, operated her motor vehicle, well above the legal limit of alcohol consumption, which eventually resulted in the death of two-year-old Jasmine Ross. Mohabir denied the allegation.

The woman of East Canje, Corentyne Berbice, was arraigned before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh. She was granted bail and ordered to lodge her passport at the court along with other travel documents. The prosecution informed the court that she is expected to face other charges including ’cause of death’.

Police said that Mohabir, when tested at the scene, was significantly above the legal limit. It was also found that she was speeding when she lost control along the Cumberland Public Road and collided with the motorcycle which had the two-year-old as the pillion rider.

The rider and his two-year-old daughter were flung into the air and landed just a few metres away from the point of impact.
