Nineteen-year-old Marlena Emptage will spend the next four years behind bars, having confessed to having more than 59 kilos of compressed marijuana in her possession.
The young resident begged for leniency from Magistrate Leron Daly. She apologized profusely and promised to not repeat her actions.
Emptage took full responsibility for her actions, which led to her boyfriend, Tariq Gentle, and her sister, Yvette Robinson having charges against them dropped.
According to the prosecution for the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) on January 18, an operation was conducted in Norton Street, and ranks acting on information went to Emptage’s home where they searched her bedroom. The drugs, which were in three bags, were found. An additional amount was found in her living room.
Despite her pleas for leniency, Magistrate Daly sentenced Emptage to four years behind bars and fined her $53.1M for the possession of narcotics. Emptage had told CANU the drugs did not belong to her, but rather to the recently slain Roy Charles, who was murdered on Durban Street.
She explained that after Charles’ murder, she was unable to return the narcotics which she was paid $100,000 to keep. She explained that there was no way of her returning the drugs since Charles was gunned down.
Thirty-eight-year-old Anthony Charles, called “Skiddle” was riddled with bullets on January 9, 2023 in Durban Street. Charles was reportedly cleaning a drain in the area when two men pulled up in a car and started to indiscriminately discharge rounds at him.
At the scene, pandemonium broke out as family members and friends gathered, only to witness Charles lying in a pool of his own blood. Eyewitnesses say that after being shot multiple times, Charles fell to the ground and began gasping for breath.
It was further revealed that Charles remained on the ground before he lost consciousness and was later pronounced dead on arrival by Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT).
Charles is no stranger to the law. He was recently charged with several counts of armed robbery at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. Police say their investigation is ongoing.
