Guyanese convicted drug trafficker, Barry Dataram was held by US immigration officials last week after arriving at the John F. Kennedy International Airport.
Guyana Standard understands that Dataram is being held for questioning in relation to a number of drug trafficking crimes.
Dataram, two years ago, completed his three-year jail sentence in Guyana. The self-confessed drug lord, and his reputed wife, were apprehended by the Surinamese authorities back in 2017, after attempting to flee Guyana.
Police had issued a wanted bulletin for Dataram for possession of ammunition without licence, and possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking back in 2016.
He is now facing possible additional drug trafficking charges in the United States of America. In 2009, the US issued an extradition request for Dataram. He had moved to the courts seeking to block his extradition.
Sometime last year, Dataram reportedly sought to have his US passport renewed as he is a US citizen. He was successful in this effort and booked a flight to the US.
