A construction worker has a lot to be thankful for after surviving what could have been an electrocution incident while working at a multi-storey city building this morning. The near-fatal incident also caused a power outage in several parts of the city.

The Guyana Standard understands that around 9:30 hrs this morning, the worker came into contact with a high-voltage electrical wire while doing construction work atop a building on Regent Street, Georgetown. The man received extensive burns to his body and was rushed to the Burn Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital.

The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) said the incident caused a network disturbance and disrupted service to customers in sections of Georgetown, the entire West Bank, and West Coast Demerara.

GPL in a statement implored contractors to observe the necessary safety precautions to avoid injury and unnecessary service disruptions. This news agency understands that GPL’s teams have commenced works for the restoration of power to affected areas.
