Eight months after a violent protest along the East Coast of Demerara (ECD), the Guyana Police Force (GPF) has now issued wanted bulletins for several persons for acts of terrorism. The bulletins come exactly a week after the Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall said that the barricading of roads, burning of debris and assaulting commuters are tantamount to terrorism.
Last week, the minister was keen to highlight this offence and the fact that it carries stringent penalties. He admitted to raising concerns with the GPF top brass about the pace of the investigation.
Nandlall said that he reminded the cops that persons at the Mon Repos community market were attacked, robbed and their properties destroyed by protestors. Those attacks were carried out after an online agency erroneously reported that a cop, who stood accused of shooting a civilian, had been released.
The force, today, said that it is now seeking the public’s assistance for information about the whereabouts of these persons to be prosecuted.
“Terror and mayhem were unleashed on persons on the East Coast of Demerara in June last year, during which several vehicles were burnt, and a number of stalls were ransacked and looted at the Mon Repos Market, ECD. Roads were blocked by burning debris, and scores of persons were beaten and robbed during the acts of terror,” the force said.
