With the construction and rehabilitation of highways and access roads across the country, the Guyana Road Safety Council (GRSC) is cautioning drivers to be even more considerate and cautious when commuting.
So said Coordinator of the Guyana Road Safety Council, Ramona Doorgen as she spoke to Guyana Standard about the risks that exist with new roads.
Doorgen posited with even wider roads, the probability of accidents occurring are even higher. She implored drivers to not only drive safer, but to also be observant of other drivers.
“We still have a problem with speeding in our country. We often find that people are speeding because they are hurrying to get somewhere. We have to do better if we want safer roads. Leave early and arrive on time,” Doorgen said.
The coordinator noted that recently established Road Safety Councils across several administrative regions will have the task of recommending several mechanisms that can improve better use of new and extended highways.
“That is why we are pushing eagerly to complete the councils and associations. The first course of training we are exposing them to knowledge about the dangers that are sometimes associated with poor use of the roads,” Doorgen said.
She continued, “We are going to also be doing an audit on road safety and also an inspection to identify where safety measures should be put in place while we continue to see infrastructural development.”
Too many deaths have already been recorded on the roadways for 2023. So far, from a total of 8 accidents, 12 persons have lost their lives on the roadways; one being a child. A number of campaigns have been launched across the country to ensure all the necessary consideration and caution is observed.
