Detectives are on the hunt for a man who torched a cattle farmer yesterday because he provided police officers with details of an accident in Hopetown, West Coast Berbice.
The 51 year-old man known as Trevor Jameer remains in a critical state in the hospital as he suffered major burns on his body.
A source close to the investigation told the Guyana Standard the residents were apparently angry that Jameer aided investigators with details about an accident in Hopetown. That accident involved a 19-year-old who was pulled from the scene and the car was torched. The teen reportedly struck and injured two men, including a school-aged boy.
The source in the district told this news outlet that the Jameer’s attack stemmed from an allegation that he identified several residents as part of the gang that torched the car the night of the incident.
The source further said that a number of threats were made to Jameer since the accident two weeks ago. The source further related that while no one has been arrested in connection with the torching of Jameer, the police have the identity of the suspect.
Meanwhile, Jameer’s daughter Travene McAlmont, told the press this morning that her father provided details to the police which resulted in the arrest of the teen and further details about the torching of the vehicle.
The woman explained that sometime this week, a lone male, who is also a resident of the district, saw Jameer and accused him of providing evidence against him about the incident. She recollected that the man, who appeared furious, threatened to kill her father.
She explained that about an hour later, the man returned with a bottle containing what could have been a highly flammable substance along with a stick; threatening to make good on his threats.
“Everything just happened so fast. He came with the bottle at the gate… I think it was gasoline inside, and he threw it on my father. The stick that was already on fire he took and lit my father on fire. He started screaming and we rushed out and we managed to put him out but he was already badly burned,” McAlmont said. She explained that after committing the act he fled on foot and has not been seen since.
Investigations are ongoing.
