A self-confessed drug dealer will spend the next four years behind bars contemplating his actions, after he took blame for the possession of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
The convicted man, Chaterpaul Singh, is also one of two persons awaiting trial at the Supreme Court for conspiring to execute a businessman from the Lethem district.
Singh however took responsibility for the drugs before Magistrate Leron Daly, which resulted in his co-accused, Anesia Isfehani, of Crown Dam Industry, East Coast Demerara, having the allegation against her discharged.
It was alleged that Singh, last week, during a sting operation, attempted to traffic 1.542 kilograms (3.3 lbs) of cannabis, at Norton Street, Georgetown.
Magistrate Daly took several things into consideration, including the prevalence of drug trafficking and the fact that Singh did not waste the court’s time. Singh was sentenced to serve four years in prison and also fined a total of $1,387,800.
On February 21, ranks from the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) acting on information, conducted an operation at Norton Street, where Singh’s car was intercepted.
Ranks, during a search of the vehicle, found three parcels of compressed cannabis. The drugs had a street value of $500,000.
