Yesterday afternoon, a fire broke out at Lot “C” Louisa Row, Wortmanville, Georgetown, threatening the safety of residents and causing significant damage to the apartment building. Fortunately, immediate action and expert firefighting resulted in the minimization of damage to the structure. However, the incident left several families homeless.

The building is a two-storey timber and concrete structure owned by Malinda Prescott and operated as an apartment complex. Apartment Two, located on the western half of the ground floor, was occupied by 37-year-old Candacy Lowe and her family of three. As a result of the fire, the apartment and its contents were destroyed, leaving four people homeless. Apartment Four, located on the western half of the top floor, was occupied by 47-year-old Neil Reynolds and his family of four. As a result of the fire, this apartment and its contents were severely damaged.

Following investigations by the Fire Prevention Department, it was determined that the fire was the result of children left unattended playing with matches, which ignited nearby combustibles and spread to the entire apartment.

The fire was extinguished using one jet working from WT#105 via water relay from WT#85, one jet working from light pump #125 working from an open water supply, one jet working from water carrier #16 tank supply and subsequently an open circuit water relay from WT#85.
