Police are currently investigating the alleged murder of a 26-year-old housewife, Aneeza Ishmael, which occurred around 10:00 hrs on Monday at Hope Estate, East Coast Demerara (ECD). The suspect, Ricardo Kattow called ‘Otis’, is a fisherman and also a resident of Hope Estate.
According to police reports, the now-deceased woman and the suspect lived together in a common-law relationship, but had ongoing domestic issues as the suspect accused her of being unfaithful. On March 3rd, Aneeza left home to stay with a friend in Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, due to these issues.
However, on Monday, Aneeza returned home to collect her belongings in the company of her sister, when the suspect confronted Aneeza and asked her not to leave. She insisted that she was only there to collect her clothing. This made the suspect angry, and he pulled out a knife from the waist of his pants and allegedly attacked the woman.
Aneeza’s sister managed to push her away and told her to run, but the suspect caught up with her and stabbed her in the neck, face, and hands, causing her to fall to the ground. The suspect then attacked Aneeza’s sister, but she was able to fend him off, receiving a wound to her left thumb. The suspect then inflicted several wounds on his body and consumed a poisonous substance, causing him to fall to the ground.
Upon arrival at the scene, the victim and the suspect were taken to different hospitals by cops for medical attention. Unfortunately, Aneeza was pronounced dead by a doctor at the hospital, while the suspect was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital under police guard.
The scene was thoroughly processed, and police found one knife in the yard and an empty bottle containing the substance the suspect had consumed. The deceased woman’s body was then escorted to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home for a post-mortem examination.
Investigations are still ongoing, and the police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation.
