Tragedy struck Greenwich Park Public Road on Monday, claiming the lives of four people in a gruesome accident. The incident involved minibus BWW 8364 and a motor lorry GZZ 2285, driven by Vernon Prowell and Ewart Stewart, respectively.
According to police reports, the accident occurred around 9:30 a.m. when the lorry was traveling at a high speed on the Northern side of Greenwich Park Public Road, approaching a pedestrian crossing. Minibus BWW 8364 was traveling in the opposite direction.
Stewart, the lorry driver, claims that a black motorcar in front of him suddenly stopped at the pedestrian crossing. In an attempt to avoid colliding with the car, he applied the brakes and swerved right. In the process, the lorry collided with the right-side front portion of the minibus.
The impact resulted in the death of three passengers, Margaret Kennedy, Olga Reddy, and Elvis Charles, who were rushed to Leonora Cottage Hospital but succumbed to their injuries. Minibus driver Vernon Prowell was transferred to the St Joseph Mercy Hospital but also died while receiving treatment.
Two other passengers, Stella Parhoo and Severn Austin, were examined and transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital for further treatment. Four other passengers, Shemar Alleyne, Selmont Brisport, Samuel Ramdas, and Junior Jack, were also examined and admitted to the Leonora Cottage Hospital.
A breath analysis was conducted on the lorry driver, which returned a result of .00%. The four bodies are presently lying at Ezeekel Funeral Parlor, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police are currently investigating the accident, which has left the community in shock and mourning.
