Executive Member of the Working People’s Alliance (WPA) David Hinds has come to the defence of his comrades who are under fire for insensitive remarks pertaining to the ethnic composition of the joint services. Hinds has also called out the opposition for its condemnation of the two WPA members.
Hinds, last evening on his weekly talk show Politics 101, chastised members of the Opposition, including Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton for publicly distancing and condemning WPA members Tacuma Ogunseye and Rhonda Layne. Hinds, expressed utter disdain at the action of Norton who he said did little to defend the WPA members.
“Aubrey has to decide whether he is going to go down in history as the Leader of the Opposition who delivers opposition prisoners to the enemy. That’s what those brothers and sisters on the PNC have done. If they felt aggrieved by what they said, there were ways we could have handled this situation; even speak to them directly,” Hinds said.
Meanwhile, Dr. Hinds also chastised the Joint Services, specifically statements made by Chief-of-Staff Brigadier Godfrey Bess who lambasted the WPA for remarks made about the ethnic composition of the joint services. Bess had stated that the joint services are mandated constitutionally to serve and protect Guyanese.
Hinds during his programme however stated, “Constitutionally, you have no right to beat up on people who are protesting but more than that the people that you are beating up on are your own people.”
Several political figures, organizations and even religious bodies have all condemned utterances made by the WPA members during a public meeting recently. The administration has also signaled its intentions to prosecute the members for their utterances. Hinds in response said, “If they want to jail us for it, then jail me quickly.”
