The COI will be appointed in accordance with Section 72 (1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, Chapter 99:06 Laws of Guyana, which gives the minister the power to direct a formal investigation into any accident that occurs in the course of employment. The COI will be tasked with determining the cause of the accident and making recommendations to prevent future accidents.
The COI will be comprised of competent individuals, including an experienced mining engineer and a geologist. Their primary goal will be to investigate the cause(s) of the accident and provide recommendations for preventing similar incidents from occurring in the future.
On March 11, 2023, Neptrid Hercules went missing while operating a CAT D9T Dozer at the East Montgomery Mine. The incident was caused by a failure in the Overburden Dump, which led to Hercules and the vehicle being covered by the overburden material. After a painful and extensive search, Hercules was finally found several days later.
