In an early morning bust on Friday, a 52-year-old resident of ‘C’ Field squatting area, Sophia was caught carrying over 16 kilograms of marijuana at the New Amsterdam Ferry Stelling.
A police officer from the Central Police Station noticed two men carrying two multi-coloured bags and acting suspiciously as they boarded a passenger boat at the stelling.
The police officer approached the men and identified himself, stating his suspicion and intention to search them and their bags. One of the suspects agreed, but when the officer found four bulky parcels wrapped with transparent plastic bags containing a quantity of cannabis, one of the men jumped into the Berbice River and escaped.
The remaining suspect, the 52-year-old man, was arrested and escorted, along with the cannabis to the Central Police Station. The police weighed the cannabis in his presence, amounting to a total of 16,646 grams.
The police officer reported that the second suspect was still at large and called for anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward.
