Not only did they remove her organs without her permission, they failed, on several appropriate occasions, to inform her about that aspect of the procedure, for which they charged her over $650,000. Now she is left to bear the physical and emotional effects of a procedure for which she gave no consent. That is why, armed with some of Guyana’s top lawyers, Wonder Kellman-Hall is suing Balwant Singh Hospital for just around $6.6M.
This is according to court documents seen by Guyana Standard.
The writ states that Kellman-Hall, a married woman in her mid-40s, visited Balwant Singh Hospital in June 2021 after encountering medical problems. Dr. Madhu Singh, a gynecologist who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Balwant Singh, advised the woman that she had fibroids attached to her womb as well as an umbilical hernia.
The writ further states that it was agreed that for a fee of $659,500, Dr. Singh would perform two surgeries; one for the removal of the womb and another for the removal of the hernia.
The court document states that Kellman-Hall “expressly informed” Dr. Singh that she did not want her ovaries and cervix to be removed. This request, according to Kellman-Hall, was acknowledged by Dr. Singh.
The surgeries were performed on June 9, 2021 and the patient was discharged on June 11.
Kellman-Hall claims that she was told nothing about the additional procedure when she was discharged.
Further, she said that she visited Dr. Singh “some time” after the surgery but was not told about the removal of the organs.
Even more, on August 23, 2022, Kellman-Hall underwent an ultra sound at Balwant Singh. The woman claims that Dr. Singh told her that everything was “normal” with her body. Still, at that point, nothing was said about the removal of her cervix or ovaries.
But on August 29, Kellman-Hall, feeling unlike her normal self, decided to get a second opinion. She took another ultra sound at the Cancer Institute of Guyana Inc. where she was advised that, based on the ultrasound, her cervix and ovaries were removed
Hall soon began experiencing various changes in her body.
In the writ, she told the court how she suffered.
Kellman-Hall said she endured extreme sweating, pains, hot flashes, chills, lack of energy, lack of concentration and mood swings.
The woman said that she then revisited Balwant Singh Hospital and it was only then that Dr. Singh explained that she had bleeding on one of her ovaries and it was thus removed during the surgery.
Kellman- Hall said she requested all the documentation from the hospital concerning the surgery however she has not received any such information or documentation to date.
Kellman-Hall is being represented by a battery of lawyers including Sanjeev Datadin.
